Administrative / Biographical History

Alfred Dutton, of Holyhead, Anglesey, was the Paymaster on the HMS Tara during the First World War. The Tara was formerly a passenger steamer called the SS Hibernia of the London & North Western Railway Company, which carried passengers between Holyhead and Dublin. Following the outbreak of war in 1914, the renamed ship was requisitioned by the Admiralty, and converted into an armed boarding ship. The Tara was transferred to the Eastern Mediterranean in 1915. On 5th November 1915, a German submarine torpedoed the ship at Solum Bay, Egypt. The crew, the majority of whom came from Anglesey, including Dutton, were captured by Turkish forces and held prisoner by a group of Senussi soldiers for 135 days until the British Western Frontier Force rescued them at Bir el Hakim (Libya).
