Scope and Content

Alexander Harding Hughes' original half-plate glass negatives, many of which show evidence of deterioration, are originally believed to have been donated by the Colwyn Bay & Llandudno Field Club and were deposited by Llandudno Library in the Caernarfon Record Office, who arranged to produce prints of the majority of them. Comments in pencil on the dorse of some of the prints were written by one of the Caernarfon archivists at this time. Both plates and prints were transferred to Conwy Archive Service c.2000, where prints have been made of some of the missing glass negatives. The collection also includes a small number of smaller film negatives, assumed to be also by AHH.

Administrative / Biographical History

Alexander Harding Hughes (1850-1922) came to Llandudno c. 1882 and for 38 years was a partner of William Arnold of Arnold & Arnold Ltd., Milliners & Drapers, 83 Mostyn Street, Llandudno. He was an accomplished amateur photographer and well known in Llandudno as a lecturer. He was one of the principle contributors to W Bezant Lowe's two volume work entitled 'The Heart of Northern Wales' of 1911.
