Scope and Content

Before his death in 2002 Spike Milligan gave to St John’s College Oxford the manuscripts of around 30 works of fiction, poetry and non-fiction, including his five volume Second World War biography. The collection totals around 4,500 leaves of manuscript, typescript and illustrative material.

Administrative / Biographical History

Milligan, Terence Alan [Spike] (1918–2002), comedian and author, one of the key creative forces who transformed post-war British comedy, bringing irreverence, surrealism and the absurd to popular culture. He wrote best-selling fiction, memoirs, poetry and children’s literature, just under half of which is represented in some form in this collection of manuscripts.
