Administrative / Biographical History

This parish was created out of the parishes of Sprotbrough St Mary and Doncaster St George. The church lies near the site of the pre-Reformation hospital dedicated to St Edmund.

St Edmund's church centre is on the site of a medieval chapel and hospital for the reception of travellers. By 1841 the site was occupied by Anchorage Farm and during World War II the buildings were used for military purposes. Thereafter the farm fell into disrepair and was bought in 1952 by the Diocese of Sheffield. The eastern part of Sprotbrough parish was transferred to the ancient parish of Doncaster (St George), and a disused barn converted into St Edmund's church centre. The opening and dedication ceremony took place on 27 February 1954. The church became a conventional district in 1990 and closed in 2009.
