Administrative / Biographical History

Roman Deep Holdings Ltd was formed in 1935 to mine for gold at Dolaucothi, Pumsaint, Caio, Carmarthenshire, with a capital of £500,000. The main focus of the workings was the Ogofau Mine at Dolaucothi. In 1937, the company formed British Goldfields (No. 1) Ltd as an operating company. Mining stopped in 1938 when the companies' funds ran out. The last mine manager of Roman Deep Holdings was T. R. H. Nelson. C. N. Walter became the receiver and manager of British Goldfields (No. 1). The mine was abandoned in 1940 and the companies were dissolved in 1943.
