Administrative / Biographical History

James Porteous & Co Ltd was registered as a private limited company in 1913  with a share capital of 75,000 pounds sterling. The original shareholders included James, Archibald and Frank Porteous. The company operated as woollen manufacturers, mainly producing high grade scotch tweed, overcoats and flannels for the female goods trade from the Meadow Mill, Alva, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. In 1935 the share capital was reduced to 20,634 pounds sterling. The company was in existence until at least the early 1960s .
