Edith Mary (Dorothy) Collingwood, née Isaac (1857-1928)

Wife of W. G. Collingwood, and mother of Dora, Robin, Ursula and Barbara.

A painter, born in 1857 in Maldon, Essex to Thomas Isaac, a corn merchant, and Sarah, née Prentice. When she was 18, she went to the Slade School in London and lived with relatives of her future husband, William Gershom Collingwood. They married in 1883 and she moved to the Lake District, initially to Gill Head, Windermere, and later to Lanehead, Coniston, in 1891. As an artist, she worked on landscapes, portraits, flowers and miniatures, later concentrating on flowers and miniatures. She was elected as a member of the Society of Miniaturists. She completed a number of commissions around Britain, and exhibited extensively in the Lake District and further afield including at the Royal Academy. Her husband co-founded the Lake Artist’s Society in 1904 and she was a life member. With W. G. Collingwood, she had four children: Dorothy (Dora) S. Collingwood, later Altounyan (1886); Barbara Crystal Collingwood, later Gnosspelius (1887); Robin George Collingwood (1889); and Ursula Mavis Collingwood, later Luard-Selby (1891). She died at Lanehead in 1928.
