The origins of this firm can be traced to the late 1840s when a Mr McKinlay began to build his cooperage in Glasgow. He was succeeded by Charles S Whitelaw in about 1878. By 1888 the firm advertised itself as coopers, vat and tun builders, hoop and stave merchants operating from 100 Commerce Street, Glasgow and employing 40 hands. The firm widely supplied the whisky and brewing trades in the United Kingdom. C S Whitelaw Ltd was first incorporated as limited liability company number SC003427on 16 February 1897. The company was acquired by Teacher (Distillers) Ltd in 1956. It remains a dormant non-trading company of the Allied Distillers Ltd group.
