This diary documents Professor Macafee's trip to the United States of America as part of a Gynaecological Visiting Society delegation during which he visited New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Chicago and New Orleans. The contents include detailed descriptions of the individual hospitals visited, of clinical procedures demonstrated and of talks given, as well as astute observations on the journey itself and on the social aspects of the visit. It ends with a frank critique of the American healthcare system, its standards and funding, the role of nurses and midwives, and the cultural differences between America and Britain which impact on the medical profession. Items attached include black and white and colour images of people and places, promotional material relating to hospitals, maps, souvenir menus and passenger lists, and press cuttings.
