Correspondence on the death of Indira Gandhi, Prime Minister of India. These are:
Letter from Dennis Duncanson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to The High Commissioner for India to express the sorrow of the Council and Members of the Society at the news of the death of the Prime Minister, and to ask the Ambassador to convey their sentiments to the President, the new Prime Minister and the Government of India, dated 6 November 1984.
Letter from Dennis Duncanson, President, Royal Asiatic Society, to Dr. Chandan Roy Chaudhuri, Asiatic Society, to express shock at the assassination of the Prime Minister. He also informs concerning the unveiling of a memorial stone to Sandor Csoma de Koros on the Society's premises. Dated 9 November 1984.

Administrative / Biographical History

The Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland was founded by the eminent Sanskrit scholar Sir Henry Thomas Colebrooke on the 15th March 1823. It received its Royal Charter from King George IV on the 11th August 1824 'for the investigation of subjects connected with and for the encouragement of science, literature and the arts in relation to Asia'. It continues as a forum for those who are interested in the languages, cultures and history of Asia to meet and exchange ideas.
