Mitchley Hill Chapel Records

The collection consists of the records of the Trustees and Elders of Mitchley Hill Chapel. It consists of minute books, administrative documents, accounts and a hymn book.

Mitchley Hill Chapel grew out of the activities of a small group of Christians who had been holding a regular Sunday Schools in their home in the Sanderstead district of South Croyden, and had established outreach meetings in local houses for prayer and bible study. Eventually land in the area was procured with the help of the Laing family, and a fundraising effort established to build and furnish a chapel. The chapel was officially opened in January 1958. Starting with a membership of 35, this grew to 60 in the first year and 100 within three years. Substantial additions were made to the building in 1963 and 1980, and a separate Youth Hut built in the mid-sixties. As well as Sunday worship, a successful Woman's Hour was established, meeting on Tuesday afternoons and later a more short-lived Men's Group.

The Chapel was established as an independent autonomous congregation on Brethren principles, with no full-time leadership, a breaking of bread service on Sunday, along with Sunday School and bible classes.

The collection is open to any accredited reader.

The collection includes material which is subject to the Data Protection Act 1998. An embargo of fifty years (from 2015) applies to any material referring to the Trustees themselves. There is a list of the Trustees contained in the first box of contents (attached to a copy of the 'Donation Agreement').
