The Great Depression in British Agriculture at the end of the 19th century, together with the introduction of heavy taxation on inherited wealth in the 20th century put an end to agricultural land as the primary source of wealth for the upper classes. Along with the introduction of protection for agricultural tenancies many estates were sold or broken up often leading to outright sales from the mid-20th century.
