Administrative / Biographical History

The correspondence relates to Termination Land (The Shackleton Ice Shelf), first sited by Wilkes during the United States Exploring Expedition, 1838-1842, later named for Sir Ernest Shackleton by Douglas Mawson during the Australasian Antarctic Expedition, 1911-1914 and to the scientific programme for the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-1904 (leader Robert Falcon Scot).
