Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Glasgow Provision Trade Association was established at the inaugural meeting on 9th November 1888 in Glasgow. The Association agreed on its constitution and rules in 1889 and Robert Osborne was elected as the first president. One of the main objectives of the Association was to promote a better understanding between wholesalers and importers, especially when looking at domestic agricultural interests. In 1898 the Association changed its name to the Scottish Provision Trade Association to serve importers and wholesalers throughout Scotland. During this year the Association also opened the Produce Exchange, Glasgow, in rooms rented from the Bazaar Committee of the Glasgow Corporation. The Association celebrated its centenery year in 1989 .
