Administrative / Biographical History

The Vale of Neath Brewery was established in the 1830s in Cadoxton-juxta-Neath, Glamorgan. Initially the business was successful, but economic difficulties and a fire in 1843 led to the sale of the business in 1850 to Evan Evans (1791-1871). Evans was a maltster, brewer and beer merchant, who also owned a schooner which traded between Neath and Bristol. Later he became a substantial colliery owner and was mayor of Neath. The brewery was producing 1,000 barrels a week by 1860 and soon acquired a good reputation. The brewery remained in the Evans and Evans Bevan family until 1967 when it was acquired by Messrs Whitbread Wales Ltd from Sir David Evans Bevan. The brewery eventually closed in 1972.
