RECORDS OF OXFORDSHIRE NURSING FEDERATION

Scope and Content

The Oxfordshire Nursing Federation was formed in 1908. Its initial purposes were to: encourage nursing and midwifery in the county; meet the requirements of the 1910 Midwives Act through the provision of certified midwives; connect local nursing associations scattered throughout Oxfordshire; encourage the setting up of District Nursing Associations; create a central fund to financially support women training as nurses and midwives; assist and supervise their training and work through a County Superintendent.

Early work of the Federation focussed on providing trained nurses in areas with no provision, and providing care to poorer communities in their homes. Funding was initially provided through scholarship grants from the County Council and Ministry of Health, and by public subscriptions and donations.

The records comprise minutes and financial accounts from the Federation's formation in 1908 until the late 1920s (H11/1), and annual reports and balance sheets returned to the Federation by the District Nursing Associations between 1922 and 1932 (H11/2). Further records relate to fundraising events organisated in aid of the Federation's work, notably a Georgian Pageant held at Headington Hill Hall in 1926 (H11/3).

The records were deposited in 1960 and formerly catalogued under reference O.N.F. The collection was recatalogued by Katherine Kinrade in October 2022.
