Douglas Garman Papers

The papers comprise poems [81 sheets] and a review of Francis Hope,'The Left Was Sometimes Right' from the New Statesman, 19 April 1968, pp. 515-516, which touches on Douglas Garman [1 sheet].

Douglas Mavin Garman (1903-1969) was born in Wednesbury, Staffordshire to Dr Walter Garman and Margaret 'Marjorie' Garman (née Magill). Douglas was the fourth of nine children. His interest in both literature and communism shaped his life. After graduating from Caius College, Cambridge, Garman worked with Edgell Rickword editing the literary magazine The Calendar of Modern Letters from 1925-1927. He published a book of poems, Jaded Hero (1927), was a commissioning editor at the Marxist publishers Lawrence & Wishart, and worked as an education officer for the Communist Party of Great Britain.
