The Manchester Unity of the Indepedent Order of Oddfellows was founded in 1810; in the course of the 19th century it established local lodges over much of the United Kingdom and persuaded many existing lodges to join the Unity. It acted as a friendly society; members paid a subscription and in return received a range of benefits (sick pay, pension, and assistance to dependents). The Harbour of Refuge Lodge was based in Holyhead, Anglesey, and was active from 1863 to 1910.
