Administrative / Biographical History

The Association of the Master Cabinet Makers of Scotland was formed in 1890, but by their second meeting, the name of the association had been changed to the Scottish Furniture Manufacturers' Association , or SFMA as it came to be known. The SFMA was formed with the principle aim of regulating all aspects of the industry. Its members were employers who, in return for their membership, could expect help and advice regarding strike action, and assistance in resolving disputes with employees. However, the association also protected the rights of workers, since members were expected to adhere to strict rules regarding workers' hours, overtime, minimum wage, and allowances. By the 1970s, the SFMA were also heavily involved in apprenticeships and training, having regional joint apprenticeships and training commitees whose aims included ensuring colleges of further education provided suitable courses to promote the highest possible standard of craftsmanship. The minute books in this collection continue on until 1992 and it it unknown what happened to the Association after this date.
