Scope and Content

Slides and photographs relating to the history of Currie, Balerno, Juniper Green, Colinton and Slateford. These include images of local paper, grain and snuff mills; schools; churches in particular Currie Kirk and local clubs and organisations and local people and views.

Administrative / Biographical History

Currie and District Local History Society was founded by John Tweedie to preserve the heritage of Currie and the other Water of Leith communities such as Balerno, Juniper Green and Colinton. Currie is a village in the Edinburgh suburbs which had originally been part of Midlothian. He was particularly interested in the history of the paper mills, especially Kinleith Mill. Over time a large number of slides were ammassed by John Tweedie for the purpose of giving educational talks. Some slides are copies of photographs in his own collection, but most are unique.
