Scope and Content

Crewe Works Railway Engineers, practising the assembly of railways on the sand dunes in the Kinmel Bay or St George's area, prior to embarking to South Africa during the Boer War.

Administrative / Biographical History

These men worked to restore railways that were blown up by the Boers. They were formed during the Crimea War and disbanded in 1912. this makes them the oldest volunteer unit in the world, pre-dating theTerritorial Army. There is a monument to them in Crewe. Only two of them died as a result of enemy action.
