Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Glasgow University MacLaurin Society was founded at the University of Glasgow, Scotland in 1957 and aimed to "promote an interest in and knowledge of topics pertaining to mathematics". The Committee of the Society consisted of the honorary presidents, who was usually the professor of Mathematics, with elected student members as the president, secretary and treasurer, four other members and one staff member. Meetings were held for the delivery of lectures and subsequent discussion by leading mathematicians and members of Glasgow University Mathematics Department. Membership of the Society was open to staff and students alike. The Society took its name from Colin MacLaurin, an eighteenth century mathematician who attended Glasgow University. In 2010, the society was still active.
