The correspondence covers the British Relief Expedition, 1836 (leader James Clark Ross). This expedition was sponsored by the Admiralty and private subscription and dispatched to rescue the crews of eleven whaling vessels that had been beset and forced to winter in Davis Strait in 1835. All the vessels returned home safely except William Torr which was lost with all hands off the Baffin Island coast in December 1835.
