BALBY MIDDLE SCHOOL, OSWIN AVENUE, RECORDS

Comprising: log book 1981-1996; admission registers 1913-1990

This school was built in 1913 in Oswin Avenue by the West Riding County Council. A meeting of Balby with Hexthorpe School Board on 29 July 1913 recorded that the name of the school would be Balby Church Lane Council School [reference SD3/2 page 49] although the first admission register of the boys department [SR82/2/1] records the name as Balby New Council School. Details of the staff appointed at the new school are recorded on pages 40 and 46 of the Balby with Hexthorpe School Board minute book referred to above. From September 1962 the school became a mixed school for pupils aged between 11 and 15 or 16 years of age and was known as Balby High School. As a result of educational reorganization in September 1981 the school opened as Balby Middle School taking pupils aged between 9 and 13 years who would then go to Balby Carr Upper School on Weston Road. The middle school closed in 1996 after the decision was taken that pupils transferred to secondary school at the age of 11 years. Years 7, and 8 were, therefore, moved to Balby Carr Upper School, while younger pupils were accommodated in the existing primary schools.
