Chiaroscuro: typescript draft

Carbon copy typescript draft, [1950], of Augustus John's autobiography, published as Chiaroscuro: Fragments of an Autobiography (London: Jonathan Cape, 1952), containing manuscript emendations and deletions by the author, copious in places.
In addition to many minor deletions the text contains several passages omitted from the published version (ff. 35-36, 36-37, 55-56, 74, 75, 137, 188, 192-193, 226, 231-232, 246, 251, 262-263, 273, 320, 323-326). Besides the missing folios there are other substantial passages in the published book (pp. 96-99, 174-175, 274-275) missing from the typescript (see ff. 97, 189, 316). The titles 'Ups and Downs' (typed) and 'Now and Then' (in ink) appear on the title page (f. i), both cancelled. There are also a few editorial annotations in red pencil and blue ink.

Title based on contents.

John's address is given on the title page (f. i) as Castello San Peyre, Opio, A[lpes] M[aritime], [France], where he stayed during the Summer of 1950.

Folios 4, 65-66, 281-293 missing.

Folios 2, 317 and 319 were purchased in July 2019 among the papers now NLW MS 24135D and have been re-integrated in this volume.
