Administrative / Biographical History

The Glasgow University Labour Club was formed in November 1946  at the University of Glasgow , Scotland, and affiliated to the Glasgow University Labour Party (Graduates), the National Association of Labour Student Organisations and the Glasgow City Labour Party. Membership was open to all matriculated students, graduates and staff of the University of Glasgow, as well as other training colleges, who supported the general policy of the Labour Government and only members of proscribed organisations were barred. The committee was elected for one year only and consisted of a chairman, a vice-chairman, an honorary secretary, an honorary treasurer, a Queen Margaret convenor, an assistant secretary, a Queen Margaret secretary, a whip secretary, a publicity secretary, a minutes secretary, a social secretary and two ordinary members. Their main purpose was to foster their political creeds within and outside the University, taking an interest in the administrative affairs of the University, especially the election of the Rector. The meetings took place monthly in term-time and involved speakers, discussion groups and debates. The club was still running in 2003  .
