For the period before 1948, the papers relate only to Clifton Hospital (then the North Riding Mental Hospital). After 1948 they cover all 'B' Group hospitals: Clifton, Claypenny, Whixley, Moorlands and also Bubwith, Tadcaster and Ripon Hostels. In most cases, however, there is no discernable break in the records in 1948, the majority of which, both before and after that date, relate to Clifton which was by far the biggest hospital.
The records cover, in the main, the activities of the Works Department at Clifton (after 1948 this was the Works Department for the Group and the administration and most records were concentrated at Clifton, although some Works Department staff were based at other hospitals). Within each class, records are arranged in a broadly chronological sequence, although some papers covering a number of years have been grouped together where they obviously relate to a single construction project or theme.
