Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
Casa d'Italia Ltd was incorporated in 1935 to take over the premises known as Casa d'Italia at 22 Park Circus, Glasgow, Scotland, and to administer it as a centre for the Italian community in the United Kingdom . Glasgow had a large Italian population by the end of the 19th century who came to work in the textile, marble and manufacturing trades and Glasgow was one of the few places outside of Italy to produce a daily newspaper in Italian.
Casa d'Italia Ltd offered a social club and classes for children in Italian. It sought to promote Italian culture through providing a venue for cultural societies. The company was a limited liability company but acted as a private members club. Membership was open to anyone of Italian descent upon application to the directors and payment of an annual subscription.
In 1990 the liquidators sold the Grade A listed building and the firm was finally dissolved in 1998.
