Administrative / Biographical History

In 1881, the first public electricity generator in Britain was installed in Godalming, Surrey. The next year, the Electric Light Act was passed which was the first public measure dealing with electricity supply. In 1900, several Acts of Parliament were passed granting rights to power companies in perpetuity, to supply electricity to authorised undertakings and for industrial and manufacturing purposes. A 1904 bill for empowering the North Wales Power and Traction Co. Ltd. to construct Generating Stations and supply electricity in certain parts of North Wales is one of the earliest references for Anglesey electricity. In 1926, the Electricity Supply Act introduced the first effective national co-ordination. The Central Electricity Board was created to concentrate the generation of electricity in a limited number of power stations. These stations were to be interconnected by a national grid, which was largely completed by 1935. Some places in Anglesey would not have electricity until the 1950s. Abergeirw, a village of nine properties located between Dolgellau and Trawsfynydd was the last village in Wales to be supplied with mains electricity. It was connected to The National Grid in December 2008
