Professor William Watson Buchanan (b.1930)

William Watson Buchanan, who was born in Glasgow in 1930, studied medicine at Glasgow University, gaining his MB ChB in 1954 and MD (with Commendation) in 1962. In 1968 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and Physicians of Glasgow. He was a Medical Research Fellow and Hall Research Fellow at the Gardiner Institute, Western Infirmary, Glasgow and U.S. Public Health Fellow at the National Institute of Arthritis and Metabolic Diseases, Bethesda. He later became Professor of Medicine and Honorary Consultant at the Centre for Rheumatic Diseases at the Royal Infirmary Glasgow and upon his move to Ontario, Canada, where he resides today, William Watson Buchanan was appointed Professor Emeritus of McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario.

Throughout his career to date Professor Buchanan has made many contributions to medical literature and is a regular contributor to the College Bulletin, writing on topics ranging from Robert Burn’s Rheumatology to Ice Hockey to the History of the Microscope.
