Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Young Women's Christian Association was set up in the middle of the nineteenth century in the midst of much social upheaval caused by the Crimean war and the industrial revolution, by two women who were brought together by their Christian concern and a compassionate wish to bring interest and variety into the lives of working girls, Hon. Mrs. Arthur Kinnaird and Miss Emily Robarts. Mrs I<innaird was motivated to set up a hostel for returning nurses from the Crimean war due to the lack of provision made for the comfort of these women by any other organisation. This hostel became so invaluable and popular that after the end of the Crimean war in 1856 it remained open and spread all over the country. And to these Mrs. Kinnaird gave the name of Young Women's Christian Association. Emily Robarts at this time was busy conducting prayer meetings in the London area which later became known as prayer unions. Through a meeting these two women forged a strong link and the union of the two associations took place. Y.W.C.A hostels spread further mainly providing lower rate accommodation and pastoral care for girls who had left home to work in industrial centres. Today the Y.W.C.A offers accommodation for not only women but also men and boys and provides clubs for all ages. The charitable work has spread across the globe and continues to be relevant today and is the leading charity working with the most disadvantaged young women in England and Wales today. Llanelli branch opened in 1923 and closed in 1995.
