Administrative / Biographical History

The International Brigade Association was founded in February and March 1939 by veterans of the British Battalion of the International Brigade on their return from Spain. It was instrumental in campaigning for the Spanish Republic, supporting and spreading awareness about the International Brigades, setting up memorials, maintaining contact with sister organisations across the globe and campaigning against Franco's rule in Spain. One of the later acts of the Association was to establish an International Brigade Memorial Archive at the Marx Memorial Library, to which the papers of the Association were donated in the 1970s.

Archivist's Note

The papers of the International Brigade Association were donated to the Marx Memorial Library in the 1970s, with additional regular deposits made in the following decades.
