Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Llangennech estate, near Llanelli, was purchased by Edward Rose Tunno, M.P. (1794-1863) around 1820. Tunno was a Member of the Parliament of the United Kingdom for Bossiney, Cornwall, 1826–1832. His father was John Tunno (1746–1819), a Scottish-born merchant and slave trader. [Because of his role as executor of his father-in-law's John Rose's plantation interests in Jamaica, he is listed as a claimant for compensation after the passing of the Slavery Abolition Act 1833.]
The estate straddled the parishes of Llangennech, Llanelly, Llanon and Llanedi and contained many coal deposits. The coalmines were worked by James Shears and Sons from 1824.
Tunno died in March 1863 and left the bulk of his estate, including Warnford and Llangennech, to his nephew Edward John Sartoris (1814-1888), Liberal Member for Carmarthenshire, 1868-1874, the son of his sister Matilda with Urban Sartoris of Paris.
