Scope and Content

A collection of items belonging to the late Dr. Terry James. Includes Programmes, Guide Booklets and Photographs relating to the religious, musical and cultural life of Kidwelly.

Administrative / Biographical History

Dr. Terry James was born in Kidwelly in 1933, he studied at University College, Cardiff, Royal Academy of Music, London. Having studied conducting at Rome he went on to gain a Ph.D at Cornell University New York for his thesis on the composer Bartok. Settling in London to teach he became an active member of its musical life, in particular the London Welsh Association, conducting may prestigious choral recitations.

In 1973 he won a Gold disc Grammy award for his score to ‘Jonathan Livingston Seagull’ narrated by his friend Richard Harris. Shortly afterwards he moved to Los Angeles, where he wrote several film scores including Echoes of Summer, The Dark Sun, Freedom Road and The Minstrel. He was also the musical director for several Broadway productions, including Camelot, and in 1999 was awarded the Joseph Jefferson award for the musical direction of "All Night Strut" at the Drury Lane Theatre in Evergreen Park, Illinois. After 15 years in America he moved back to Wales, settling in Carmarthen where he continued to be involved with music locally and nationally. Following his death in 2016 a memorial service was held at St. Peters Church, Carmarthen.
