Margaret Wylie Martin (nee Thomas) first matriculated at the University in 1922 and graduated with an MB with honours in 1927 and an MD in 1931.
Margaret was born in Glasgow on 4 July 1903 , daughter of William Thomas, a drapery warehouseman, and Margaret (nee Rae), a former District Nurse who had trained at Barnhill Hospital in Glasgow. Margaret Thomas attended Denniston Primary School, Whitehill Higher Grade Public School and Hutcheson's Girls' Grammar School and was an outstanding student, appearing frequently in the University prize lists. During her degree she achieved 11 first class certificates, for classes such as Psychological Medicine and Diseases of Children, won 2nd prize in two classes, 1st prize in two classes and won three medals: two for Clinical Surgery and one for Practice of Medicine. She graduated MB with honours on the 17th October 1927.
After graduating she worked at the Belvidere and Mearnskirk hospitals in Glasgow where she specialised in obstetrics and gynaecology. She carried out postgraduate research and study on Puerperal Fever (childbirth fever) and in 1931 graduated with an MD with a highly commended thesis titled The Intensive Treatment of Puerperal Sepsis.
That same year she became Resident Medical Officer at Mearnskirk Hospital, where she worked until 1936 when she married Russell Dickson Martin, a medical officer at Mearnskirk Hospital, and later in Clydebank, Inverness and Edinburgh. They had three children Duncan, Rae and Niall. Rae (Margaret Melville Rae Martin) her daughter, also became a doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynecology. Margaret Wylie Martin died in 2002 .
