Administrative / Biographical History

The Ben Line was a founding member - along with other British companies P&O, Blue Funnel Line, Glen Line, Shire Line and Castle Line - of the Far Eastern Freight Conference, a conference that had its roots in an 1879 agreement for the working of the China and Japan trade before being renamed the Far Eastern Freight Conference in 1941. Members varied slightly during the period these volumes cover, and they can be found listed on the front page of each volume.
