Scope and Content

After his purchase of Watlington Park, John Tilson bought up several other properties in the area, which were listed in 2D-35D above. The documents here in 36D concern the whole property, including the additions, and take its history up until just before its purchase by Oliver Brett, later Lord Esher.

Some of the earlier deeds in this section mention property at Hampton

Poyle and Hampton Gay. As mentioned in the Introduction, John Tilson already owned land here before he bought Watlington Park. In 1795, he sold it all to Arthur Annesley of Bletchingdon Park, and all the relevant deeds on them were transferred to the Annesleys.

Fortunately, the estate papers of the Annesleys of Bletchingdon are also kept here at Oxfordshire Archives, and have been catalogued as E6 (some other related papers were separated from this main collection, and are listed as SL11 and SL18 respectively). Most of the deeds do not concern the Tilson family directly, but these do contain some important papers, such as John Tilson's Marriage Settlement of 1767 (see SL11/3/1D/1), and several deeds about the actual sale of the lands in 1795, which searchers interested in the Tilsons ought to examine.
