Milton-under-Wychwood was created as a parish out of Shipton-under-Wychwood in 1853. The parish records of Shipton (catalogued as PAR236) should therefore be consulted for the period before then. The most important items in Shipton are an extensive series of records concerning the administration of the Poor Law at Milton while it was still under Shipton's jurisdiction, and the
Milton tithe award of 1842.
These records also include papers concerning an Iron Chapel erected at the hamlet of Lyneham, which is part of this parish.
Almost all of the records of Milton-under-Wychwood were deposited with the Bodleian Library in 1981, before being transferred to Oxfordshire Archives in 1984. Three other deposits have been made directly with Oxfordshire Archives in 1988, 1993, 1994 and 1997, and given the Accession Numbers 2811, 3641, 3850 and 4232. Some other items were deposited with Oxfordshire Archives in 1976 as part of Acc. 1268, and originally catalogued as part of Misc. Ship. They have now been transferred here. Appendix I lists the contents of each deposit, and Appendix II provides a concordance of old and new reference numbers.
