Administrative / Biographical History

David Walker was born in Dumbarton, Scotland on 6 Nov 1909, the son of David Walker who was an iron turner. David received his education at Dumbarton Academy, gaining prizes in all his classes and gained the Overtoun Gold Medal for Classics as the best pupil in his year. He attended the University of Glasgow from 1928-1932 in the Arts Faculty. In his first year, 1928-1929, he studied Latin, Greek and Mathematics, and was awarded a Certificate of Distinction in Latin and a First Class Certificate in Greek. In 1929-1930 he took Roman History, Higher Ordinary Greek, Higher Ordinary Latin and English (Ordinary). In 1930-1932 he took Latin and Greek Honours, and Moral Philosophy 1930-1931, and was awarded a Certificate of Distinction for general excellence in the work of the Latin Honours class, 1931-1932. He graduated with an MA (Hons) (Second Class) in Classics on 5 Nov 1932. After University he did his teacher training qualification at the Glasgow Provincial Training College. He went on to become the Prinicipal Teacher of Classics at Dumbarton Academy, and also taught at Keil School, Dumbarton. David Walker died in 1987.
