Scrapbook with 1746 military dispatch

/1 Scrapbook, inscribed 'Robert Thornton esquire Dundee', containing an original despatch sent by the Earl of Ancram, warning that any property or people found harbouring arms would be punished, 1746. With dried flower [possibly white rose cockade or sweet william?] The Scrapbook contains pictures from magazines etc featuring European buildings and artworks, with scenes of Australian buildings and places, particularly around Brisbane, some news cuttings, sketches and printed verses headed 'Crichton Institution'.
/2 Contextual papers, comprising modern transcript of the military despatch, provenance and pedigree of the scrapbook and the Small and Thornton families, with note on the 'Scotland Invasion' of Honley.

Rev James Small appointed Minister of the Church in Carmyllie in 1720, whose granddaughter, Agnes Small, became the wife of Robert Thornton.
Their son, William Thornton, was in business with the Sandeman family and he married Sibella Ann Sandeman in 1833. In 1855, they emigrated to Australia, settling in Ipswich, Queensland. William Thornton died there in 1878, and Sibella moved to Inverell, New South Wales where she died in 1888. Her youngest child, Mary Sandeman Thornton also died there in 1911.

The scrapbook is believed to have been created by members of the Thornton family, possibly taken with them to Australia and added to there. The Vyner family had it in their possession, but not known why as the Vyner family had no known relationship with the Thornton's. Then passed to Jim Sparke in 2021 who gave it to Heather Berry, instructing her to return it to Scotland where the military despatch would prove of use to researchers.
