Scope and Content

PUBLIC RECORDS.

Plans of abandoned mines in Flintshire and Denbighshire, 1826-1985, including negatives of plans. There is no material covering coal and oil shale mines.

Administrative / Biographical History

Before 1991, the Mining Department of the Ministry of Power (and its succesor, the Department of Energy) held all the plans of abandoned mine workings for Flintshire and Denbighshire (except for coal and oil shale mines, held by British Coal). The mines were most active during the 19th and first half of the 20th centuries. The Denbighshire mines produced fireclay, slate, granite, iron, lead and zinc ores and silica, while the Flintshire mines mostly produced limestone, lead and zinc ores.

Arrangement

Arranged into the following: plans, by mine, cross-referenced to a special edition of the Ordnance Survey 6-inch maps, 1914 edition; and index, which provides a list of plans relating to each map sheet.
