Henry Vaughan (1809-1899) donated Constable’s ‘The Hay Wain’ (NG1207) to the National Gallery in 1886. This album, which Vaughan may have assembled as a personal souvenir, contains printed extracts along with transcriptions that he made from various periodicals, catalogues, newspapers, and published biographies and criticism; there are also engravings and a photograph of the painting, an autograph letter from M. Debaines to Henry Vaughan concerning Constable’s ‘Glebe Farm’ (Tate N01274), which he had lent to the Royal Academy’s Winter Exhibition in 1886, and a letter of gratitude from a member of the public. Includes index.
