Scope and Content

Wales Gas Board records, mainly for Carmarthenshire.

Administrative / Biographical History

From the early 19th century the gas supply industry across the United Kingdom was mainly operated by local authorities and private companies. In 1948, the government reshaped the industry by enacting the Gas Act 1948. This act nationalised the UK gas industry and over a thousand gas companies were merged into twelve area gas boards of which Wales was one. Each area board was further divided into geographical groups and were often further divided into smaller districts. In 1973 the Area Boards became Regions of the British Gas Corporation.
