Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The journals and diary cover Jane's extensive travels across the United Kingdom, Europe and the wider world. Many of the journals cover a specific journey. Her Journals also mention the search for the missing British Naval Northwest passage Expedition, 1845-1848 led by her husband Sir John Franklin. Thirteen volumes cover her voyage to and subsequent life in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) where Sir John served as lieutenant governor between 1836-1843. Several of the journals have contents pages. MS 248/50;BJ contains her first reference to meeting John Franklin
