The archive comprises the surviving records of the Department of Military Studies. These comprise Board minutes from 1974-83; subsequent minutes covering 1984-1995 have not been traced. As a very small department it is unlikely that many other records were generated.

Scope and Content
Administrative / Biographical History
The Department of Military Studies was a 'micro' department, based firstly within the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, and latterly, in the Faculty of Arts. Its creation can be said to date from the appointment of Michael Elliot-Bateman as lecturer in military studies in 1968 (promoted to senior lecturer from 1975), and who acted as director of military studies.
Military studies courses were available to students in various undergraduate subjects including geography, American studies, psychology, German, French, disciplines with the Faculty of Economic and Social Studies, and Liberal Studies in Science. The Department laid emphasis not only on traditional military strategy and history, but also the sociological and psychological aspects of warfare. Academics in other departments (psychology, French government) also contributed to teaching the subject. The Department enjoyed close contacts with the Manchester Tactical Society.
On the retirement of Michael Elliot-Bateman, the Department was disestablished in October 1995, and military studies as an independent subject came to an end.
