Scope and Content

Arthur T.S. Smith was elected to Conwy Town Council in 1926, representing Deganwy ward. He served continuously on the Council, becoming an Alderman in 1931, and was Mayor from 1935-1937. He was the grandson of Mr Caleb Smith, a Liverpool shipowner, and was educated at Conway and Llandudno County School, before training as an engineer. He founded Smith's Garage Ltd, Deganwy. He married in 1916, and had a daughter (who compiled the scrapbooks in this collection) and son. His public duties included membership of many Council committees and associations. He was instrumental in the purchase of Bodlondeb. His wife was known for her social and community work, including for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) and the Llandudno new hospital scheme. They lived at Ingleside, Deganwy, and moved to Berkshire c.1960.
