Scope and Content

The volume is divided into two physically separate parts.

JELLICOE PAPERS. Vol. LIII (ff. 332, in two parts: Part I, ff. 1-166; Part II, ff. 167-332).

Volume contains:

Replies by Jellicoe - headed (f. 1) 'Part I' - to criticisms, made chiefly in published works, of Jellicoe’s actions in pre-War days, while commanding the Grand Fleet including during the Battle of Jutland, and as First Sea Lord; 1923-1927, n.d. Mostly typewritten with autograph corrections. Replies consist of:

-Two drafts (ff. 1-60 and 61-105) responding to criticisms made by Sir Winston Churchill in The World Crisis, vols. i-ii, 1923.

-Two drafts (ff. 106-113) by Jellicoe of ‘The Battle of Jutland’ giving his account of the difficulties confronting him as Commander-in-Chief of The Grand Fleet at the Battle of Jutland.

-Two drafts (ff. 114-174) by Jellicoe of ‘The Admiralty Narrative of The Battle of Jutland’ giving his opinion of the Narrative of the Battle of Jutland, 1924.

-Draft (ff. 175-179) of Chapter IV an appendix on the Battle of Jutland for a proposed second edition of The Grand Fleet 1914-1916. See Add MS 49040 for drafts of Chapters I-III.

-Two handwritten and typed drafts (ff. 183-219 and 220-254) by Jellicoe of ‘The Grand Fleet and Jutland. A Comment on Mr Churchill’s Book “The World Crisis. 1916-1918”’, preceded (f. 180) by a related letter from Adm. Sir W. E. Goodenough.

-Papers (ff.255-265) relating to the Battle of Jutland and Winston Churchill, including letter from David Beatty to Jellicoe after the battle.

- Draft (ff.322-328) by Jellicoe of ‘The story of my departure from the Admiralty’.

-Telegram (f.329) from Admiralty to the Commander-in-Chief of The Grand Fleet relating to an attack on a Scandinavian Convoy, 15 Dec 1917.

-Notes (ff.331-332) by Jellicoe on the Royal Naval Air Service in 1917 and proposals to create a separate air service.
