Scope and Content

Miscellaneous letters from a wide range of correspondents addressed to Fairfax Murray on a variety of subjects and arranged in alphabetical order of writers. Among the larger groupings are 43 (numbers 46-88, 3 April - 2 August 1917) from Arthur Christopher Benson (1862-1925) and 19 (numbers 434-52, 12 November 1879 - 20 May 1892) from Frederic, Lord Leighton (1830-1896).

For convenience the following 348 empty envelopes, which could prove useful for dating, addressed with two exceptions (numbers 304 and 348) to Fairfax Murray, are included here.

  • numbers 1-56 (October 1869 - June 1883) are in the hand of Sir Edward Burne-Jones;
  • numbers 57-122 (February 1877 - October 1887) in the hand of Sir Frederic William Burton, Director of the National Gallery;
  • numbers 123-163 (February 1870 - September 1879) in the hand of William Morris;
  • numbers 164-255 (November 1869 - January 1883) in the hand of Ruskin;
  • numbers 256-303 (June 1868 - December 1880) and 304 (addressed to Miss Isa Craig, Argosy Office and marked Introducing Mr C.F. Murray) in the hand of D.G. Rossetti;
  • numbers 305-347 (July 1868 - June 1919), addressed to Fairfax Murray, are in miscellaneous hands;
  • number 348, post-marked May 1878, is addressed to Rosa Corder.
