Papers of Nathaniel Bishop Harman

The papers consist of letters written by Nathaniel to his family during his service in the Boer War, a diary for 1900, and an unpublished autobiography written in and before 1943.

Nathaniel Bishop Harman (1869-1945) matriculated as a non-Collegiate student in 1894 and became a member of St John's College in 1895. He graduated with a double first in Natural Sciences in 1897 and was subsequently appointed a Fellow Commoner. Following his service as a Civilian Doctor in the Boer War, described so graphically in these papers, he enjoyed a distinguished career as an ophthalmic surgeon and specialist, holding senior positions in leading London hospitals and serving on several government committees into the causes and prevention of blindness. These papers were presented to the College by his son John Bishop Harman (also of St John's, BA 1929) in 1961.
