Co-operative Youth Centres Photographs

This photograph album documents the Co-operative Youth Centres at Tong Hall, Dalston Hall, Collington Rise and Stanford Hall between 1946-1948. Contained within the album is a detailed collection of photographs showing the adult staff, junior staff, child participants, activities and facilities at each location.

Established in 1943, the purpose of the Co-operative Youth Centres was to be similar to that of residential youth centres around the country. Locations would eventually be established at Tong Hall (June 1944), near Huddersfield, Dalston Hall (June 1944) near Carlisle , Collington Rise (1946) at Bexhill-on-Sea and Losehill Hall (1951) in Derbyshire. These locations would enable children to meet, learn and enjoy activities together while under the supervision of senior staff members. Activities included: handicrafts, story telling, percussion band, debates, photography, first aid, dress making, cookery and organising plays such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The movement would continue up until the eventual sale of each property. 1972 saw the sale of the final location at Losehill Hall and it was then decided that the Co-operative Youth Centres Limited would partake in voluntary liquidation.
